BMW is set to debut its eighth generation 5 series

BMW is set to debut its eighth generation 5 series on May 24th, with the car set to receive a blend of elegance and sporty styling. The most recent announcement from BMW on their official social media channels confirms that the 5 series will not feature the controversial large vertical grille seen on other models in the lineup, such as the 4 series, M3 and M4, or the X7 SUV. Instead, the grille will feature LED lighting, creating a more subdued and refined look for the luxury sedan.

In terms of powertrain options, the BMW 5 series will offer a range of engine types, including fully electric models, with the BMW i5 Limousine and BMW i5 Touring expected to arrive in 2024. The entry-level eDrive40 model will feature a single rear-mounted motor delivering 335 horsepower, while the more potent M60 xDrive variant will be equipped with two motors generating 590 horsepower. The car will also be available with plug-in hybrid drivetrains, as well as high-performance gasoline and diesel engines with 48-volt mild hybrid technology. Rumors suggest that the high-performance M5 model will feature a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, producing more than 700 horsepower.

Inside, the 5 series will feature the BMW 8.5 operating system, complete with a curved display and innovative digital services. The dashboard will feature a built-in strip of ambient lighting that flows seamlessly into the door trims, creating a cohesive and luxurious feel. This design is reminiscent of the flagship 7 series sedan.

The BMW 5 series has been one of the most popular executive sedans on the market for over 50 years, with over 10 million units produced between 1972 and early 2023. The Dingolfing factory, where the 5 series has been produced since 1973, will begin production of the new model in the second half of this year, with sales set to begin in October.

Overall, the new BMW 5 series promises to be a luxurious and technologically advanced offering, with a range of powertrain options and a refined exterior design that is sure to appeal to discerning buyers in the executive sedan market.
