Expansion of the UK’s F-35B Jet Fleet
The United Kingdom’s fleet of F-35B stealth jets is expanding with the recent arrival of more units, bringing the total number to 34. However, with one aircraft lost in an accident and four test jets stationed in the United States, the operational number stands at 30. The UK plans to have all 47 jets from the initial order delivered by the end of 2025, which would have been 48 if not for the crash.
Funding for an additional tranche of F-35B jets beyond the initial 48 has been allocated to Air Command as part of the recent annual budget cycle. The UK Ministry of Defence has clearly indicated its commitment to expanding the fleet. While the exact number of additional jets will be determined and announced in 2025, the goal remains to enhance the fleet size beyond the currently ordered 48 units.
The UK’s Defence Command Paper, “Defence in a Competitive Age,” outlines the country’s strategic intent to grow its Combat Air capacity. This includes fully establishing seven operational Typhoon squadrons and expanding the Lightning II Force. The integration of these capabilities is expected to provide a formidable combat air power, continually upgraded to meet evolving threats and exploit multi-domain integration.
The Royal Air Force (RAF) is not only expanding the fleet but also enhancing the capabilities of its existing aircraft. The Typhoon fleet will see significant upgrades, including the integration of the UK-developed ‘SPEAR Cap 3’ precision air-launched weapon and the Radar 2 programme, which will provide a powerful electronically scanned array radar. Additionally, the F-35B Lightning II jets will receive ongoing updates to their software and capabilities, ensuring alignment with the global F-35 fleet.
The UK remains committed to a long-term vision for its aircraft carriers and their accompanying fleets. While the immediate goal is to have 48 F-35B jets in service by 2025, the aspiration to reach a total of 138 jets is still on the table. This long-term strategy underscores the importance of maintaining and enhancing the UK’s defense capabilities through a robust and versatile fleet of advanced combat aircraft.
