Leeds’s downtown has been rated as England’s most violent area outside of London
Leeds city centre has been named as the most dangerous area for crime in England outside of London. According to official police figures, the centre of the city has the third highest crime rate in England and Wales, with a crime being committed every 41 minutes. There were 1,366 offences for every 1,000 residents in the area last year. Violent and sexual offences are particularly prevalent in Leeds city centre, with a total of 3,761 crimes of this nature being recorded in the area last year, making it the third highest in England and Wales.
Shoplifting and public order offences are also high in Leeds city centre, with burglary being the third highest and the rate of arson and criminal damage the fourth highest. Bicycle theft is also a concern, with the rate being the fifth highest in the country. Harehills South in Leeds was named as the second most dangerous area in the city, with a rate of 336 crimes per 1,000 residents.
The charity Victim Support has urged the government to ensure that police forces are adequately funded and resourced in their efforts to tackle crime and promote public safety. Diana Fawcett, Chief Executive at Victim Support, said, “Around one in five of us will become a victim of crime each year and the impact can be devastating. From disturbing people’s basic sense of safety and security, to turning lives upside down.” She added, “It is important that police forces are properly resourced and funded in their efforts to tackle crime and promote public safety.”
The area with the highest crime rate in the country was Fitzrovia West and Soho in London, where there are 3,500 offences for every 1,000 residents. Strand, St James & Mayfair, also in London, came in second place. The safest place to live in England and Wales was Hightown, Mossley & Timbersbrook, on the outskirts of Congleton in Cheshire East. There were just 18 crimes reported in the area last year, all of which were anti-social behaviour.
Neighbourhood policing was cited as a vital part of preventing crime by DCC Claire Parmenter, the National Police Chiefs’ Council lead for neighbourhood policing. She said, “Working with local communities and partners to problem solve, tackle anti-social behaviour, supporting victims of domestic abuse, and diverting young people from offending are just some examples of the challenging and rewarding work officers do.”
