Grainger Motor Group Accelerates Growth with Acquisition of EMG Anglia, Nears AM100 Scale

In a strategic move to expand its presence in the automotive retail sector, Grainger Motor Group founders, brothers Harry and Neal Grainger, have successfully acquired East Anglian dealer group EMG Anglia. This significant acquisition not only bolsters Grainger Motor Group’s regional footprint but also propels the company closer to achieving a coveted position in the prestigious AM100 rankings of the UK’s largest franchised motor retailers.

The deal, based on EMG Anglia’s latest statutory accounts revealing a £116 million turnover, reflects the Grainger brothers’ commitment to strategic growth. The EMG Anglia acquisition aligns seamlessly with Grainger Motor Group’s geographical and strategic ambitions, allowing the company to strengthen its partnerships with leading automakers such as Kia, Mazda, Nissan, and MG.

“The longstanding, successful EMG business is an acquisition that fits geographically and strategically with our growth ambitions, allowing us to further our strong partnership with Kia and pick up our former relationships with Mazda, Nissan, and MG,” stated the Grainger brothers, who bring a wealth of experience from their tenure at Norton Way Group, where they worked alongside their father, David Grainger.

With this latest acquisition, Grainger Motor Group is set to expand its portfolio to a total of 14 sites. These include Kia outlets in Cambridge, Ely, Kings Lynn, and Thetford; Mazda showrooms in Cambridge and Boston; MG in Ipswich; Nissan in Kings Lynn; and used car sites in Huntingdon, Duxford, Bury St Edmunds, Spalding, and Esso Stapleford.

Managing director Harry Grainger expressed enthusiasm about the expansion, saying, “We look forward to meeting all the EMG staff and welcoming them into the Grainger Motor Group family.” The addition of EMG Anglia further solidifies Grainger Motor Group’s position as a key player in the automotive retail landscape.

This acquisition comes on the heels of the Grainger brothers’ recent partnership with the acquisition of Mantles Kia Royston earlier this month. The joint managing directors swiftly followed this with the acquisition of EMG Royston, which includes a Vauxhall authorized repair station, expanding their footprint to an impressive 2.6 acres.

The Grainger brothers’ journey has been marked by a proactive approach to growth and an ability to identify strategic opportunities. Five months after leaving their roles as operations director and finance director at Norton Way Group, which was acquired by Marubeni Auto Investment in 2008, they have successfully established Grainger Motor Group as a dynamic and expanding force within the automotive retail sector.

As the automotive landscape continues to evolve, Grainger Motor Group’s acquisition of EMG Anglia showcases the company’s commitment to adapting, growing, and solidifying its position among the industry’s leading players. The strategic integration of EMG Anglia into the Grainger Motor Group family is poised to bring about new opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and enhanced customer experiences in the ever-evolving world of automotive retail.
